So that’s all I know Mr. Needling has admitted so far, Franny, she wrote.

Elsie shook her pen when it suddenly stopped working. Rising from her bed, she dug through her bag for another. Snack crackers, receipts, a dog collar and a wallet tumbled out, but no pen.

“Oh bother,” she murmured. “How did that get in here?” She lifted the dog collar curiously. “It’s like everything has legs,” she said, tossing it back into her purse.

She headed to her writing desk and searched through the drawer. Finally finding a pen, Elsie lifted her head only to catch a glimpse of something moving outside her window. Curious, she focused on a shadowy figure of a man walking hurriedly across the hotel’s lawn.

“Who would be out this late?” she questioned, looking at the time. “Half past eleven.”

She looked again and found the man’s figure disappearing down the driveway into town. Stretching, she climbed back into bed. Lifting the letter, her lips moved silently as she reread what she had last written.

“Right—Mr. Needling…” she recalled aloud. She pressed her pen against the stationery and began again.
